The 2018-2019 swim season was successful for the Lady Braves. The season was full of all around improvement and success. Two relay teams advanced to the IHSAA State Swimming Finals. These two relay teams were the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Freestyle Relay. Kaelin Christjansen, Laruen Kirchner, Apsara Sakbun, and Haley Sakbun were members of both relay teams. The 200 Medley Relay swam a time of 1:49.80 and broke the school record from 2012. In the 400 freestyle relay, the members of the relay dropped a total of 10 seconds to win the race to advance to state. They also broke the school record in this event from 2002.
Sakbun Sisters–Best Athletes
Apsara Sakbun: Apsara, a senior at Terre Haute South, has had a very successful swimming career at Terre Haute South. A few of her career achievements include being the two time sectional champion in both the 100 yard backstroke and 100 yard freestyle, being a back to back conference champion in the 100 yard backstroke, and being a part of several relay teams that advanced to state. This season Apsara broke the school record in the 100 yard freestyle, a record that was 17 years old. She also was a part of two relay teams that broke two school records. Apsara served as a team captain her senior season. Apsara will be continuing her swimming and educational career at Ball State University next year.
Haley Sakbun: Haley is a freshman at Terre Haute South. Some of Haley’s biggest accomplishments this season include being the conference champion in the 100 breaststroke and becoming the sectional championship in both the 200 yard freestyle and the 500 yard freestyle. At sectionals, she broke the longest standing swimming record at Terre Haute South by almost 7 seconds in the 500 yard freestyle. Haley represented Terre Haute South at State in 4 events. She advanced to the finals at the IHSAA Girls Swimming and Diving State Championships in both the 200 yard freestyle and the 500 yard freestyle. Overall, she placed 12th in the 200 freestyle and 13th in the 500 yard freestyle. In the 500 yard freestyle , she was the only freshman to qualify for state finals.
