Terre Haute South Vigo High School first opened its’ doors in the Fall of 1971. Terre Haute South was a consolidation of Honey Creek High School and Wiley High School. Coach Girthie Harris had a difficult time molding the future of Terre Haute South Baseball due to the fact that the feeder program for all of baseball in Vigo County was located at the former Valle Field (now Boys and Girls Club Park). There were very few youth league baseball programs in the southern portion of Vigo County. Terre Haute North Vigo was the dominant high school baseball team in Vigo County until 1985. Terre Haute North won the first seven Sectional Tournaments (1972-78; West Vigo won in 1979) and also won from 1980-83. It wasn’t until 1982 that Coach Harlan Lautenschlager and the Braves actually beat Terre Haute North in a varsity baseball game. Terre Haute North was led by Indiana High School Baseball Hall of Fame coach Don Jennings. West Vigo also defeated Terre Haute South in the Sectional Championship Game of the 1984 season. The 1985 season saw Coach Ken Martin finally bring a Sectional Championship to Terre Haute South. Not only did the Braves win the Sectional Championship that year, they also won the Regional Championship as well. The Braves repeated this feat in 1986 as well. Since the historic 1985 season, the Braves have won 13 Sectional Championships, 6 Regional Championships and 2 Final Four appearances.
